How to vote for the MEPs of your own country

International students still have the possibility to vote for the candidates to the European Parliament from their home country.
Depending on the country of residence, students will have different options to exercise their voting rights based on the provisions of that particular country. Also the deadlines for the several procedures are different depending on the State.

Vote from Embassy

International students can request to their municipality of residence through the Diplomatic-Consular Representation to vote in the host country.
Subsequently, they will receive the electoral certificate, indicating the polling station where they can vote.

Voting by Proxy

Proxy voting, also known as delegation voting or representation voting, is a system in which voters authorize another person to vote on their behalf, so international students could delegate a third party to cast their vote.
Normally, several documents are required to exercise proxy voting, including:

  • the Delegation Letter

  • Acceptance of the proxy by the designated person

  • Submission of the form to the competent authorities

It is important to note that proxy voting is often subject to specific regulations: electoral laws may vary depending on the country.

Voting Electronically

Electronic voting is a system that allows voters to express their preferences using electronic devices instead of using paper ballots and physical ballot boxes.
For voters casting their ballot abroad, specific electronic platforms are set up for them to access from their location and express their voting preference.

Voting by Post

Postal voting, also known as mail-in voting, is a method that allows voters to express their electoral preferences by sending their ballot papers via postal service.

In this case, the interested voter will need to request the ballot papers from the competent authority in the country where they are attending their mobility program, and once voted, these will need to be returned according to the specific procedure (packaging and shipping via postal service).
