20 anni, “Ma pensa tu….”

 

Cari membri delle 50 Sezioni di ESN Italia,

oggi è il nostro Compleanno.

 

Mi sentite parlare parecchio durante le Piattaforme Nazionali e siete costretti a leggere le lunghe e-mail che, insieme ai membri del Consiglio Direttivo, spesso vi mando.

 

Stavolta sarò breve.

 

Credo che se quei pazzi che nel 1994 hanno fondato, in qualche modo, ESN Italia, e che adesso hanno ben altre occupazioni e ben altri problemi rispetto al dovere organizzare un ICE o a distribuire i volantini di un nostro partner, vedessero quello che siamo diventati, commenterebbero con un “Ma pensa tu….”.

Direbbero così perché noterebbero che queste 50 Sezioni, queste centinaia di volontari che ogni giorno si inventano cose nuove che a volte riescono bene e a volte meno bene, hanno una cosa in comune: credono nei valori.

Dopo 20 anni siamo riusciti a dare un valore all’essere ESNer. Noi non ci sentiamo volontari di ESN. Ci sentiamo ESNers. Una parola quasi da scrivere sulla Carta d’Identità alla voce “Segni particolari”

Chissà cosa sarà ESN Italia nel 2034. Nel frattempo avranno già provato a cancellare l’Erasmus un’altra decina di volte, senza successo ovviamente.  Probabilmente i nostri figli staranno per fare domanda per andare in Erasmus in Australia o in Argentina. E a loro diremo “Ma pensa tu….”.

 

Quello che è sicuro è che dovremmo fermarci di più a pensare a tutto quello che facciamo per gli Erasmus, per le nostre Università, per la società civile in generale che a volte consideriamo triste perché non ha i nostri stessi sogni.

Dopo quasi due anni di Presidenza e dopo avere conosciuto molti di voi personalmente, posso, e anzi devo spronarvi a fare sempre di più, sempre meglio, a cercare di superarvi sempre. Perché? Perché siamo, se no la parte, sicuramente una delle parti (poche) migliori di questo Paese. Non abbiamo paura delle sfide, siamo sempre sorridenti e soprattutto passiamo la maggior parte delle nostre giornate a scervellarci perché chi arriva da un altro Paese si trovi bene lontano dalla propria casa. Ognuno di noi lo fa a modo suo e ognuno di noi dovrà continuare a farlo a modo suo. Ma dobbiamo continuare a farlo.

 

Ecco, oggi fermiamoci a pensare a quello che facciamo come membri di questa associazione, anzi no, come ESNers. Secondo me se lo facciamo, la frase che viene fuori, accompagnata da un sorriso non può che essere: “Ma pensa tu….”

Ma fatemi una promessa. Non cambiate mai. Siate sempre ambiziosi, sorridenti e generosi. Almeno fino a quando lo Zingarelli non avrà inserito un’altra voce a precedere la parola che descrive “il ramo della biologia che studia la possibilità di esistenza di organismi viventi nei corpi extraterrestri”. Dopo tutto, ESNER non risulterebbe più incomprensibile di ESOBIOLOGIA. “Ma pensa tu….”

Godiamoci questa giornata, senza pensare ad altro. Buon compleanno a tutti noi.

Birthday wishes by ESN Italia’s President, Carlo Bitetto

 

20 years, “Would you have ever thought that?”

 

Dear members of ESN Italia’s 50 sections,

today is our birthday.

 

During our National Platforms you often have to listen to me speaking a lot, and you also have to read long e-mails that I often send you, together with the other Board Members.

This time I won’t take long.

 

I believe that, IF those fools who somehow founded ESN Italia in 1994, and who now have quite different things to do and quite different problems to deal with – compared  to the organization of an ICE (“Incontro Nazionale Erasmus”, Erasmus Cultural Meeting) or the distribution of a partner’s leaflets, saw what we have become, their comment would be “Would you have ever thought that?”.

 

They would say that because they would notice that these 50 Sections, these hundreds of volunteers who every day make new things up (that sometimes come out well and some other times don’t), have one thing in common: they believe in their values.

 

After 20 years we managed to give value to our being ESNers. We don’t feel like ESN volunteers. We feel ESNers. A word that should almost be written on our IDs, on the “Identifying marks” line.

 

Who knows what ESN Italia will be in 2034? In the meantime, the existence of the Erasmus project will have been menaced ten other times, obviously with no success whatsoever. Our children will be probably applying for Erasmus in Australia or Argentina. And we will tell them “Would you have ever thought that?”.

 

We should certainly stop and think more about what we do for the Erasmus students, for our universities, for the society in general, which sometimes we consider as sad because it doesn’t have the same dreams as we do.

After almost two years as a President and after getting to know many of you personally, I can, or rather I must, urge you to do more and more, better and better, to try to always excel yourself. Why? Because we are, if not the best part, surely one of the (few) best parts of this country. We don’t fear the challenges, we’re always smiling and above all we spend most of our time doing what we can to let people coming from other countries feel home. Each one of us do that their way and each one of us will have to keep doing that their way. But we just have to keep doing that.

 

So, today, let’s stop and think of what we do as members of this association, or rather as ESNers. I believe that if we do so, we will just smile, while thinking  “Would you have ever thought that?”.

But promise me one thing. Stay the same. Always be ambitious, smiling and generous.

 

And now let’s enjoy this day, without thinking of anything else. Happy birthday to all of us.
